The Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection has announced the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and Consolidated Skilled Occupation List (CSOL) for the 2016-2017 Migration Program Year. The new skilled occupation lists commence on 1 July 2017.
The SOL is used for various skilled migration programs and provides an opportunity for skilled professionals from overseas with the appropriate skills to gain permanent residency in Australia. It is primarily applicable to the subclass 189 skilled independent visa.
The CSOL is used for various migration programs including Employer Sponsored temporary and permanent visas.
The new skilled occupation lists will commence on 1 July 2016.
What’s new?
The following occupations have been added to the SOL:
- Audiologists
- Orthotists and Prosthetists
The following occupations have been removed from the SOL:
- Mining Engineers
- Petroleum Engineers
- Environmental Health Officer
- Occupational Health and Safety Adviser
- Dental Hygienist

What should I do if my occupation has been removed?
If your occupation has been removed from the 2016-2017 SOL, you should consider applying for your visa before 1 July 2016. Where this is not possible, you may wish to consider alternative visa pathways to migrate to Australia such as employer sponsorship.
